After an unprecedented digital launch for more than 150 countries, ‘Aruanas’, a Globoplay original resulted from a partnership between Globo and Maria Farinha Filmes, will be released in the international catalog at MIPCOM 2019. The series was internationally recognized and had launching events held in Lisbon, London and New York, where it was acclaimed for the choice of the theme and social relevance. ‘Aruanas’ will have a special broadcast at ‘Globo Series Screening: 2020’. During the event, Globo will also present its launchings for the market, such as ‘Where my Heart is’ and ‘Unsoul’, Globoplay original productions to be released first-hand in the fair, besides ‘Second Call’, a co-production by Globo and O2 Filmes, the third season of ‘Under Pressure’ and the second season of ‘Iron Island’.
Freely inspired by true events, ‘Aruanas’ addresses an extremely relevant and current matter: the necessity of preserving the Amazon forest and the importance of activism in such context. With 10 episodes, the series is set in the Amazon and make a connection with global challenges related to the forest and climate. An alarming data: in 2018 only, deforestation in the Amazon increased 14%, the biggest leap in the last decade. Brazil ranks first in a world classification that does not deserve celebration: for three years, it has been the country that kills most activists in the world – only in 2017, 57 people were killed and 80% of them were nature defenders.
When environmental activists become part of the statistics, it sheds light upon the following issues: invisibility and lack of appreciation for these people, whose life purposes are: caring for the environment, the struggle against illegal deforestation, illegal extraction of ore, contamination of rivers and the trespassing of indigenous lands. ‘Aruanas’, in this aspect, is a necessary series in current times, because it shows the importance of environmental defenders, who risk their lives for justice, equality and a more sustainable world for the society and future generations.
Written by Estela Renner and Marcos Nisti, with the collaboration of Pedro de Barros, ‘Aruanas’ is a coproduction by Globo and Maria Farinha Filmes. In the plot, three childhood friends - Natalie (Débora Falabella), Luiza (Leandra Leal) and Verônica (Taís Araújo) - get together to protect the environment and start the environmental NGO Aruana – an indigenous name that means “sentinel”. The story takes place in the fictional city of Cari, in the countryside of Amazonas, where life is tough and strange facts happen: a cry for help in the shape of an anonymous report, people getting mysteriously sick, murderers and threats to the indigenous people. The activists, each in their own investigative path, create a mosaic of evidence that leads to a big scheme of environmental crimes involving illegal mining and a renowned national mining company.
The environmental thriller has a clear purpose: drawing attention to the global environmental crisis and showing appreciation and protection for the work of activists. With artistic direction by Carlos Manga Jr, general Direction of Estela Renner and technical partnership of Greenpeace, ‘Aruanas’ goes beyond suspense and action to highlight the debate on the preservation of biodiversity and, consequently, life.
Sustainability beyond the subject
‘Aruanas’ had the technical partnership of Greenpeace and the support of some of the biggest and most important social organizations of human and environmental rights in the world, such as Amnesty International, WWF Brasil, Global Witness, UN Environment, Alana Institute, Rainforest Foundation Norway, 350.org, ISA (Instituto Socioambiental – Socio-Environmental Institute), IPAM, IMAZON, Conectas Direitos Humanos, Justiça Global, Greenfaith, Interfaith Rainforest Initiative, Oxfam Brasil, Purpose and APIB (Articulação dos Povos Indígenas do Brasil – Brazilian Articulation of Indigenous People).
Sustainability also permeated the whole production: the series reused 90% of the costumes, recycling second-hand clothes, producing less waste and 33.8% of the extras lived in the region of the Amazon rainforest.
Besides, from July to October, 50% of the aruanas.tv sales will be donated to an initiative for the protection of the Amazon forest.
Girl power
‘Aruanas’ also highlights female protagonism. Besides the four protagonists and the director, 47% of the production crew is made up of women, in a movement that valued female empowerment.
