Globo arrives at one of the main events in the international market, the NAPTE 2020, betting on a diversity of themes and narratives in which the station has consolidated its investments, aiming at the distribution to multiple platforms. The company, whose main competitive feature is its content, showcases brand-new productions with viewing records by the Brazilian audience.
“We have built a varied portfolio of multi-platform productions and narrative genres, which allows our non-English content to travel like never before. We have been focusing on continuous investments in talents, creativity and new technologies, to reach new markets and consumers” states Raphael Corrêa Netto, director of International Businesses at Globo. As a result of this international planning, the company has just announced the internationalization of Globoplay, its OTT platform, available in the USA since January 19th. The residents of the country are already able to watch the vast programming of Globo with more flexibility, with over 500 titles available on demand and the content of the company’s international channel. Globo has been in the United States for over 20 years. As the biggest Brazilian streaming platform, the OTT became operational in Brazil in 2015, and has over 22 million users per month, offering both free content and exclusive content for subscribers.
Among the highlights of the 2020 content catalog, there is the telenovela ‘Sweet Diva’, a recent success on Globo’s prime time, that reached over 55 million Brazilian viewers only on its final episode, breaking viewing records for this time slot and causing a commotion on social media. From the International Emmy Award winners Walcyr Carrasco (from ‘The Other Side of Paradise’, ‘Trail of Lies’ and ‘Hidden Truths’) and Amora Mautner (from ‘Brazil Avenue’, ‘Precious Pearl’ and ‘Harassment’), the telenovela is about the story of Maria da Paz (Juliana Paes, ‘Edge of Desire’ and ‘Total Dreamer’), a strong, hardworking woman marked by a forbidden love, who becomes a successful baking entrepreneur. Despite overcoming all struggles and building an empire with her cakes, Maria da Paz cannot win the love of her own daughter, Josiane (Ágatha Moreira, ‘Hidden Truths’), a young woman with doubtful character who wants to steal everything her mother has accomplished. The story engaged the Brazilian audience, bringing a positive message of strength and determination.
Another recent hit from Globo’s prime time, ‘A Life Worth Living’ portrays the friendship between Paloma (Grazi Massafera, ‘Hidden Truths’ and ‘Caribbean Flower’) and Alberto (Antônio Fagundes, ‘Trail of Lies’ and ‘Old River’). After their medical exams are exchanged, she thinks she has a terminal illness and decides to rethink her life, until she finds out that, actually, it was Alberto’s exam. Then, she decides she wants to meet him, and they end up becoming friends. The story flirts with Literature and brings a fairytale aura to the plot, with one of the best performances on this slot in the last 8 years in Brazil.
As for the telenovela ‘Orphans of A Nation’, it is about a forbidden love story between two Syrian refugees, Laila (Julia Dalavia, ‘The Other Side of Paradise’ and ‘Old River’) and Jamil (Renato Góes, ‘Dark Days’ and ‘Old River’), who need to leave their homeland and meet in Brazil, the place where they choose to rebuild their lives. But in order to live their love, they need to overcome barriers and face a revenge plan. Written by Thelma Guedes and Duca Rachid – winners of the International Emmy Award for Best Telenovela in 2014 for ‘Precious Pearl’ – with direction by Gustavo Fernandéz, the production was one of the winners of the Rose D’Or Awards 2019 in the category Soaps or Telenovelas.
The telenovela ‘A Time to Love’ completes the catalog of long formats in this edition. The story is a period romance, set in the 1920s, about the story of Maria Clara (Vitória Strada, ‘Espelho da Vida’*), a Portuguese young woman who falls in love with Inácio (Bruno Cabrerizo), with whom she gets pregnant. Sent to a convent, the young woman has a daughter, who is given for adoption against the mother’s will. Later, she manages to escape the place and goes to Brazil searching for her great love so they can find their daughter together.
Short formats
Besides the telenovelas, Globo takes a diverse catalog of series to the NATPE. Among the titles, we can find the environmental thriller ‘Aruanas’ – a Globoplay original coproduced by Globo and Maria Farinha Filmes – that approaches an extremely relevant topic: the need to preserve the Amazon rainforest and the local communities, and the importance of the activists’ work in this context. Having the Amazon as the scenario, the story counted on the technical partnership of Greenpeace, to go beyond the suspense and the action to highlight the debate on the preservation of biodiversity and, consequently, of life.
Among the social dramas, ‘Second Call’, a coproduction between Globo and O2 Filmes, approaches the transformative power of education with stories from the nighttime classes for young adults and their teachers, who fight daily against the precariousness of the educational system. This same struggle is shared by the medical team of ‘Under Pressure’, who needs to face on the series’ third season new dilemmas in order to save lives. The series was already licensed for about 70 countries in its previous seasons and the protagonist, Marjorie Estiano, was nominated on the last edition of the International Emmy Awards for her performance on season two.
The supernatural drama ‘Unsoul’ is a new bet from Globo on the genre. Written by Ana Paula Maia with artistic direction by Carlos Manga Jr., the series approaches the universe of Brígida, a small village where descents of Ukrainian immigrants keep the culture of their ancestors alive, and mysterious events multiply themselves. Season two of ‘Iron Island’ is one of the titles. With a lot of emotion, hazards and an intense visual effects work, the series continues following the journey of Dante (Cauã Reymond, from ‘Doomed’ and ‘Brazil Avenue’) with his professional and personal dramas, while he leads an oil platform.
And to complete the international catalog, the limited series ‘Where My Heart Is’ portrays love as the central theme of the story. The show brings a brilliant and idealist middle-class physician who enters the dark world of chemical dependence, claiming for love and affection.
