International competition honors the best creations for TV in the world
On Tuesday evening, April 9th, in Las Vegas, USA, the winners of the 2019 International Television and Film Awards in New York were announced. The competition is one of the most important TV awards in the world, and more than 50 countries were nominated this year. Globo, GloboNews and Globosat Channels – GNT, Off and Multishow – received all together 12 medals: three gold, four silver and five bronze in the categories Best Use of Technology, Best Innovation, Best Special Visual Effects, Entertainment Program, Animation and Documentary.
For five years in a row, the innovation and the creativity of Globo content are awarded. This time, with five medals. The project ‘Magic Box’, by Globo Studio at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, received two gold medals: one in the Best Use of Technology category and the other in the Best Innovation category. Through virtual reality and augmented reality, a room of only 22 square meters was multiplied, creating a dynamic space with no limits to anchor shows and all the broadcast directly from Moscow. “It was a challenge to reproduce the magnitude of the Red Square in that space. We made a mix of the physical part with computer graphics in such harmonious way that it was difficult to notice what was real and what was not. We mixed several resources to achieve this result. All solutions were developed by Globo, there was nothing ready and available in the market”, says Alexandre Arrabal, Director of Illustration and Art of Journalism and Sport Department.
In the category Best Special Visual Effects, Globo received silver and bronze – silver for the project ‘Virtuais do Fantástico’, where different theme scenarios are created in the studio enabling interaction between the anchors and tridimensional animations; and bronze for ‘Show dos Famosos’ on ‘Domingão do Faustão’, which had its musical numbers illustrated with art in augmented reality integrated to the scenography and broadcast live, with camera tracking in real time. The GP Brazil F1 2017 Opening Clip won bronze in the category Animation: Promotion/Open & ID for showing how São Paulo, the host city, embraces several cultures, ethnic groups and colors, inserting the event sponsors brands in a subtle and realistic way.
GloboNews was awarded for the fourth year at the festival. The news channel won a silver medal in the category Documentary: Current Affairs with the film ‘Shores of a War – Heroes and Victims in Mosul’, which followed the retake of Mosul, one of the major Iraq cities, controlled by the Islamic State since 2014. The cinematographic reporter Gabriel Chaim registered for seven months the battle of Iraq army against terrorism, in what is considered the biggest urban conflict since World War II. ‘Shores of a War – Heroes and Victims in Mosul’ was written and edited by Marita Graça, editor of GloboNews. “It was the biggest volume of material I’ve ever faced as an editor. But the result is a very rich document about the war to retake Mosul, with images of suffering, violence, but also joy”, says Marita.
Globosat channels GNT, Off and Multishow received six awards. “Being recognized at one of the most important audiovisual festivals in the world just reinforces our purpose to take quality and plural content to all types of audience. In all the development process of a Globosat production, fiction or documentary film, an entertainment program, a journalistic coverage or a musical concert, there is always care and focus to offer relevant and innovative content to our audience”, says Paulo Marinho, general director of Globosat channels and content.
