Globo telenovela ‘Orphans of a Nation’ was recently nominated for the first time to the Rose D’Or Awards, a traditional award ceremony that happens in London and highlights the main global productions in the audiovisual market.
Written by Thelma Guedes and Duca Rachid – winners of the International Emmy Award for Best Novela in 2014 for ‘Precious Pearl’ – directed by Gustavo Fernandéz, ‘Orphans of a Nation’ was nominated in the category Soaps or Telenovelas.
The telenovela that touched the Brazilian audience about the forbidden love story between Jamil (Renato Góes) and Laila (Julia Dalavia) will also be the highlight of Globo at MIPCANCUN, showcasing the first episode during a Breakfast & Screening on November 21st, at 7:45 A.M. at the Cancun Theater.
Going beyond the TV screens and digital platforms, the telenovela had the technical partnership of ACNUR (the UN Agency for Refugees), with the collaboration of an architect of the agency to portray the refugee camp set, making available real uniforms and tents from humanitarian operations – which were later replaced by Globo by new housing units – and information on the refugees’ forced resettlement and social-cultural integration context. Besides, the cast also featured the performance of a Syrian refugee, Kaysar Dadour, who brought a real outlook to his character.
Throughout the plot, two Syrian refugees need to leave their homeland and go to Brazil to rebuild their lives. But, in order to live their love, they need to overcome many barriers. Promised to the powerful sheik Aziz (Herson Capri, ‘Irrational Heart’ and ‘Rock Story’), Laila (Julia Dalavia, ‘The Other Side of Paradise’) escapes with her parents to São Paulo. However, Jamil (Renato Góes, ‘Dark Days’), Aziz’s godson, is sent to Brazil to take her back and force her to fulfill the marriage contract. Jamil ends up falling in love with Laila and they decide to get married, awakening Aziz’s wrath. After the sheik is mysteriously murdered, his daughter Dalila (Alice Wegmann, ‘Land of the Strong’) resumes her father’s revenge plan, doing everything she can to separate the couple.
Rose D’Or awards 10 categories and the winners will be announced on December 1st during a gala, at Kings Place, in London.
