With lots of visual effects and computer graphics, the work portrays the tense routine on an oil platform.
Action, drama, extreme situations and plenty of intensity are present in each episode of ‘Iron Island’, a series that Globo launches first hand at MIPCOM 2018. With impressive technology and set design, in addition to a cast led by actor Cauã Reymond (‘Brazil Avenue’, ‘Above Justice’ and ‘Doomed’), the plot takes place on an oil platform and tells the story of an oil worker torn between the dilemmas of family life on the mainland and the constant rush at sea.
Written by Max Mallmann and Adriana Lunardi, with text supervision by Mauro Wilson, general and artistic direction by Afonso Poyart, and direction by Roberta Richard and Guga Sander, ‘Iron Island’ is one of the company’s major wagers, with its second season already in production. This release, as well as other previously unreleased productions presented at Cannes, is the result of new content creation and production dynamics that Globo has been experimenting with in recent years, covering different markets and exhibition platforms.
The plot features Dante (Cauã Reymond) as one of the oil workers that spends most of the time confined at PLT-137, an oil platform located an hour off the Brazilian coast. There, their lives are constantly in danger and they face all kinds of challenges to maintain production. They are heroes at sea, but not so much on the mainland. When they come back to land, they return to family disputes, marriages hanging by a thread and bills to pay.
“It’s a story focused on people who work in this universe and live a double life – some time on land, some time at sea. In real life, a platform is something that can explode at any moment, an extremely dangerous industry, and we were able to carry this concept to the characters’ everyday lives. It’s as if everyone there was living the last day of their lives,” said Alfonso Poyart, general and artistic director for the series.
The plot and its characters facing extremely universal dramas team up for an innovative artistic production. The series was entirely shot and completed in 4K. From the first to the last episode, it features visual effects and computer graphics work that, among other sets and action scenes, created the oil platform model in 3D and simulated several ocean conditions, explosions and accidents at sea. In addition, studies and research allowed Estúdios Globo to build a replica of the platform with an area of almost 3,000 sq m, where 60% of the series was shot, and a 315 sq m set featuring the vessel’s interior, crew cabins, control rooms, infirmary and leisure areas for the oil workers.
Production challenges also involved the cast members, who underwent a series of courses, experiences and training to bring the characters to life. In addition to Cauã Reymond, the series features actors Sophie Charlotte (‘The Party’ and ‘Dark Days’), Klebber Toledo (‘The Formula’), Maria Casadevall (‘Trail of Lies’), Osmar Prado (‘Doomed’) and Cássia Kiss (‘The Party’), among others.
Globo will be located at booth P0.A10 during MIPCOM 2018.
