With a star-studded cast known to the international audience, the production is a drama full of suspense and secrets inspired by the book of the same name.
There are two sides to every truth: what you see and what they hide from you. This is the premise of ‘If I Close My Eyes Now’, the new limited series that Globo launches on this edition of MIPCOM 2018. With a star-studded cast, recognized by audiences around the world, and set in the 1960s, the production tells the coming-of-age story of two teenagers, tangled in the dark secrets of the city where they live and of its inhabitants. A result of Globo’s investment in multiplatform products, ‘If I Close My Eyes Now’ has also just premiered in Brazil.
The psychological thriller begins when Paulo (João Gabriel D’Aleluia/Milton Gonçalves, ‘Side By Side’) and Eduardo (Xande Valois) find the body of young Anita (Thainá Duarte) on the edge of a lake while skipping school. Accused of a crime they did not commit, they soon realize that the case is shrouded in mystery and involves important names from the city, such as mayor Adriano Marques Torres (Murilo Benício, ‘Brazil Avenue’), first lady Isabel (Débora Falabella, ‘Brazil Avenue’), entrepreneur Geraldo Bastos (Gabriel Braga Nunes, ‘Irrational Heart’) and his wife Adalgisa (Mariana Ximenes, ‘Precious Pearl’). On their own, the boys begin a dangerous investigation. Along the way, they meet the enigmatic Ubiratan (Antônio Fagundes, ‘Trail of Lies’), and ask for his help.
Other murders take place throughout the limited series, and Paulo, Eduardo and Ubiratan need to solve the crimes so that they don’t become the next victims. That's the way the drama deals with themes such as frustration, secrets and repressed desires, connecting directly with audiences from different cultures and parts of the world.
The limited series is written by Ricardo Linhares, inspired by Edney Silvestre’s book of the same name and with artistic direction by Carlos Manga Jr. “You don’t get to know a character necessarily from what they say, but from what they don’t say and from their actions, from the way the narrative progresses,” said the director. “It’s a story that could take place anywhere. It’s as if the characters were stuck in a bubble of seeming happiness,” he said.
Globo is located at booth P0.A10 during MIPCOM 2018.
