This Tuesday, 15, the telenovela ‘Orphans of a Nation’ got the Grand Prize in the 15th edition of the Seoul Drama Awards, the most important entertainment award in Asia. The top prize among all categorieshighlights the work with more relevance, popularity and originality among the competitors. This is the second international award the telenovela written by Thelma Guedes and Duca Rachid received over the past few years – in 2019, it won the Rose D’Or Awards in the Serial Drama category.
Gustavo Fernández, artistic director of the telenovela, celebrates its international recognition. “Receiving this award is another joy this work has brought us. We were very fortunate to have this story so well received in Brazil, and now knowing that it is moving and resonating with people around the world is an even greater pleasure”, he celebrates. “Winning an award in 2020 that was won in previous years by ‘This is Us,’ ‘Babylon’ and ‘Berlin’, TV productions that are hugely worldwide makes us very proud”.
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the award ceremony was held without an audience at the MBC Open Hall, in Seoul, Korea. The Seoul Drama Awards elected the best international TV productions in the categories Serial Drama, TV Movie, Mini-Series and Short Form. By joining productions from around the world, the award gives space and visibility to different cultures, breaking down geographic barriers and allowing productions from other regions to stand out in Asia, a major producer of dramaturgy worldwide.
After winning an International Emmy for ‘Precious Pearl’, authors Duca Rachid and Thelma Guedes cannot hide their pride in seeing one more international acknowledgement to their work. “It is always good to have your work being praised, especially in such an important award like the Seoul Drama Awards. But the most exciting thing is knowing that our message of embracing and having empathy for refugees is moving other audiences around the world”, says author Duca Rachid. Also moved by this achievement, Thelma Guedes shares the award with the team: “I need to thank Globo for making this telenovela possible, our partners and directors, and the entire team that embarked on this journey with us”.
Licensed to more 50 countries around the world, ‘Orphans of a Nation’ is currently airing at the Imagen channel in Mexico, at Red Uno in Bolivia, and is present in the company’s catalogue of products for the Virtual Screenings Autumn, a virtual event gathering the main players and distributors from the global content market. In Brazil, the telenovela has all its chapters available on Globoplay, Globo’s OTT platform.
This is the first time Globo wins the top category of the Seoul International Drama Awards. In 2011, ‘Passione’ got the Silver Bird Prizein the Serial Dramacategory. TV Globo also had another nomination, in 2007, with ‘Little Missy’.
