'Second Call', one of Globo's releases for MIPCOM, portrays the power of education to transform lives
Co-produced with O2 Filmes, new series promises to be yet another successful social drama produced by Globo Studios

Following successes such as 'Under Pressure' and 'Jailers', Globo launches another social drama in the international market, this time focusing on education. 'Second Call' is one of the highlights that the company presents at MIPCOM 2019, completing the offering of series that address social issues often not clearly understood by society - the reality of public hospitals, the tension of the prison system, and now public education with focus on teaching for youth and adults.
'Second Call' depicts the stories of teachers and students that overcome a series of obstacles in a complex public education system and how, in this scenario, education appears as hope in the mission of reminding everyone that it is never too late to have a second chance. Freely inspired in real life, the series shows the challenges faced by those who, on the one hand, teach and, on the other hand, those who have the desire to go back to school, despite all the difficulties they face. The poetry of the series is in this desire for transformation, which involves both teachers and students. And education makes it all possible. Education transforms lives.
The thread of the story is teacher Lucia, character of Debora Bloch ('Land of the Strong’). After some time away, she returns to classrooms, now in evening classes for youth and adult education at the fictional Carolina Maria de Jesus State School. Returning to school and teaching at night is much more than a new work schedule for her: it is a fresh start – or an attempt at it – after having experienced a traumatic situation, which had a profound impact on her life, and completely changed the way she relates to her students.
Although this trauma has definitely marked her, Lucia is fearless and persistent, and clings to the chance to try to get students to see hope in education for better days. It is in this belief that she also places her faith to continue, as her students and the school become the fuel and mission of her life.
This mission is shared with the other teachers with whom she shares the school corridors: the History and Geography teacher Sonia (Hermila Guedes, from 'Harassment'), the newly arrived Arts teacher Marco Andre (Silvio Guindane, from 'Pride and Passion'), the high-spirited Math teacher Eliete (Thalita Carauta, from 'A Second Chance’), and the practical principal Jaci (Paulo Gorgulho). Together, they face daily institutional abandonment, lack of resources and recognition, and deal with their most diverse personal conflicts and dramas.
The willpower of those who could not finish their studies at the right age, and now, willingly and spontaneously, decide to return to the classroom, is also highlighted in the work. Supported by the example of their teachers, the students at Carolina Maria de Jesus State School juggle their private busy routines and individual dramas, without losing spirit and their huge willpower that drives them toward their goal: a brighter future.
Written by Carla Faour and Julia Spadaccini, 'Second Call' is a co-production of Globo with O2 Filmes, directed by Joana Jabace, who is behind other hits like 'Harassment', 'Rules of the Game', ‘Brazil Avenue' and 'The Enchanted Tale’. The cast also consists of Carol Duarte (‘Edge of Desire’), Mariana Nunes ('Jailers'), Felipe Simas ('Total Dreamer’), Nanda Costa (‘A Second Chance’), Otavio Muller (‘Rules of the Game’), José Dumont ('Land of the Strong’), and Arthur Aguiar ('The Other Side of Paradise').
Robust series catalog
In addition to 'Second Call', Globo features at MIPCOM 2019 a vigorous catalog of series produced by Globo Studios, with newly released hits, and short formats yet unpublished around the world - such as ‘Where My Heart Is’ and ‘Unsoul’. Furthermore, Globo also features the third season of ‘Under Pressure’, a series that in its previous seasons has been licensed to over 70 countries, and the second season of ‘Iron Island’. This year's highlight is the action drama series 'Aruanas', original Globoplay - Globo Group OTT platform - fruit of the partnership between Globo and Maria Farinha Filmes. In July, the series inaugurated a previously unreleased distribution model for Globo, to more than 150 countries, through a digital platform. And now, it is available for licensing in the market. Trailers and episodes of these and other Globo products available in the international catalog are at www.globo.com/screening.
During the fair, Globo will have a special session in the ‘Globo Series Screening: 2020’ in which it will present the ‘Aruanas’ showcase and the news in the series genre.
