One of the main highlights in the catalogue that Globo presents at NATPE 2019, ‘A Second Chance’ is a family drama that deals with the protagonist role each person plays in relation to their own story. The telenovela is written by João Emanuel Carneiro, author of the big hit ‘Brazil Avenue’, known for creating irresistible hooks and situations that surprise the audience. Once again, the author bet on surprising resolutions that have made ‘A Second Chance’ a success in its prime time airing in Brazil, with average reach of over 45 million people per day and a record of almost 54 million viewers. Its debut won the first place in the Social Wit List among the worldwide and Latin American premieres most commented on social networks.
‘A Second Chance’ tells the saga of Luzia (Giovanna Antonelli, ‘The Clone’), a simple, hard-working woman who has her life upended after falling in love with Beto Falcão (Emilio Dantas, ‘Edge of Desire’), a singer who reclaims success after being presumed dead. Throughout the plot, Luzia will go to great lengths to rewrite her story and bring her family back together, which was torn apart by a series of ploys devised by Karola (Deborah Secco, ‘Irrational Heart’), Beto’s ex-girlfriend, and Laureta (Adriana Esteves, ‘Brazil Avenue’), a powerful figure in the region’s night life.
The telenovela is set in Bahia, a state in northeastern Brazil, and one of the country’s most sought-after tourist destinations. The area is known for its natural beauty and paradise-like beaches, as well as for its cuisine and the influence of the African culture. The story mostly takes place in Salvador, the state capital, where local colors, music, climate and history intertwine. The plot required intense immersion in the local culture with scenes shot in the cities of Porto Seguro, Salvador, beautiful Trancoso, as well as the Globo Studios located in Rio de Janeiro.
‘A Second Chance’ was co-written by João Emanuel Carneiro and Márcia Prates, with artistic and general direction by Dennis Carvalho, general direction by Maria de Médicis and direction by Cristiano Marques, Marcelo Zambelli, Noa Bressane and Ricardo Spencer.
