A global reference in the production of telenovelas, Globo Studios ends the 2020 award season with many reasons to celebrate. Recently, the telenovela ‘Orphans of a Nation’ won a prize in the Best Telenovela category at the 2020 International Emmy Awards. Recently launched on the international market, ‘A Life Worth Living’ was nominated for the Rose d'Or Awards. These productions join the hall of fame for award-winning productions recognized for their excellence in Brazil and abroad.
Shown in Brazil in 2019, ‘Orphans of a Nation’ created by Thelma Guedes and Duca Rachid - who won an Emmy in 2014 with ‘Precious Pearl’, tells a story of love and resilience. Jamil and Laila arrive in Brazil with the desire to rebuild their lives. She is a Syrian refugee. He is employed by a powerful Lebanese sheik, who took Laila by force to become one of his wives. Surprised by their passion, and fleeing a nation at war, the two join forces to make their love possible. In addition to displaying the refugee issue as a backdrop, the telenovela’s main messages are empathy, cultural diversity, and resilience in the name of love. Its award at the 48th edition of the International Emmy Awards was the third time this production has been recognized around the world: the drama received the Grand Prize at the Seoul Drama Awards and, in 2019, it won at the Rose D’Or Awards in the Serial Drama category. The production has already been licensed to more than fifty countries, including Mexico, Uruguay and Bolivia.
Meanwhile, ‘A Life Worth Living’, created by Rosane Svartman and Paulo Halm - responsible for the great global phenomenon ‘Total Dreamer’ - tells the stories of Paloma, Ramon, Alberto and Marcos. Their fate is intertwined after Paloma mistakenly received the result of Alberto's medical exam, revealing a terminal illness. It didn't take long for the confusion over the exams to be cleared up, but from the moment Paloma received the news that her death was imminent, until discovering that a mistake had been made, she sees her life change completely. In addition to its inspiring history, the production highlighted the importance of literature, introducing an artistic statement into the plot and placing the spotlight on the great classics. The production was nominated for the 2020 Rose d’Or Awards, in the Best Telenovela category. Recently launched on the international market, ‘A Life Worth Living’ had Portugal as its first showcase outside of Brazil, becoming the most-watched Pay-TV attraction in the country.
“It is very gratifying to know that a story that came out of your head, your imagination, your art, has reached so many people in so many different places. Winning an International Emmy, for example, considered the Oscar of global TV, is an honor and a huge responsibility”, recounted author Thelma Guedes about the awards for ‘Orphans of a Nation’. In 2014, Thelma, alongside Duda Rachid, won an Emmy (Best Telenovela) for ‘Precious Pearl’. In 2015, Aguinaldo Silva's production, ‘Empire’ , was a winner in the same category. In 2016, the telenovela ‘Hidden Truths’ won in the category, and actress Grazi Massafera was nominated as Best Actress - this particular novela was responsible for raising the level of productions in its genre and is coming back for a new season in 2021, focusing on streaming platforms.
