Empathy, love and unity of peoples. These are the pillars of Orphans of a Nation, the 6 PM slot success, written by the International Emmy winners, Duca Rachid and Thelma Guedes, and general direction by André Câmara. Orphans of a Nation is a great love story between refugees developed in the context of the Syrian civil war, which has already caused thousands of deaths and generated a migration flow of almost 6 million people.
In the background of this love story between Laila (Julia Dalavia) and Jamil (Renata Goes), we got in touch with several cultures, beliefs, dreams, accents, and a single nation: Brazil. The telenovela shows that people arrived, arrive and will be arriving in Brazil to restart their lives, in a country that is traditionally welcoming. In the words of Duca Rachid, “the metaphor we can use is the embrace: embrace what is different”. This reinforces the idea of fraternity and passes on the central message of a single ancestry living on the same land.
The topic is very contemporary all over the world and gave us the huge challenge of portraying several cultures in a single place. “We built Syria, Lebanon, Greece and London... all in Brazil”, says artistic director Gustavo Fernández. This was proof that there are no geographic borders that limit our empathy towards others. Orphans of a Nation joined so many cultures that it will certainly be welcomed by many others.
