Having become a symbol in the struggle for human rights, the story of city councilor Marielle Franco is seen in a new light in a 6-episode documentary series produced by Globo Studios, initially available on its streaming platform, Globoplay. On March 14, 2018, returning from an appointment with women in Rio de Janeiro, the car carrying Marielle was hit by thirteen shots. In addition to the councilor, the attack took the life of the driver Anderson Gomes. Only PR Adviser Fernanda Chaves survived the attack.
The 6 episodes of “Marielle – the Documentary” took 5 months to produce and take place in two parallel timelines: the councilor’s life story, starting from her teenage years, and the investigations into the fateful day of March 14, to the present day. The episodes include both the investigation and the repercussions of the case, the impact on families, and spread of fake news. “It is a case still without answers, and with some twists and turns over the last two years. Basically, this is what guides the documentary. While moving forward on a specific line of investigation, we show details of her life that viewers hadn`t know about”, summarizes director Caio Cavechini.
On her last International Women’s Day, Franco gave her final speech at the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Chamber of Councillors, only six days before her execution-style killing. With a flower she had just received from a friend, she reattributed the gesture with a phrase that would make all the sense in the world less than a week later: "The roses of resistance sprout from the asphalt." The Brazilian councilwoman’s voice was abruptly silenced, but in Rio, in Brazil and in the rest of the world a chorus of indignant voices broke out in response to the death of the woman who became a mother in adolescence, graduated in Social Science, and who ultimately became an important activist in the fight against LGBTphobia. From the sprawling Maré favela to headlines worldwide, Marielle Franco became a symbol for the struggle for human rights and social justice. She is far from being a figure of the past. She is present today.
Marielle still present
Marielle Franco was born in Complexo da Maré (a favela in Rio de Janeiro), and joined the struggle for human rights after losing a friend who was the victim of a stray bullet in a shootout between drug dealers and the police. After the birth of her daughter, at the age of 19, she became involved in the defense of women's rights, and introduced the debate on life in the favelas. Elected as the fifth most voted councilor in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, her fight focused on the rights of women and young black people, residents of deprived communities. and the LGBTI community.
