Dona Flor
Synopsis
When Dona Flor meets Vadinho, the typical bohemian gambler and hustler, she falls madly in love with him. The passion works both ways. Albeit the disapproval of her mother, the bitter Mrs. Rosilda, they get married, but are not happy ever after. Soon, Vadinho reveals himself, leaving Flor by herself at home to spend nights in brothels or at the roulette tables in the Novo Tabaris casino. But, one fine day during Carnival, he has a fatal heart attack right in the middle of the parade and dies. Flor thus becomes a widow.
She takes years to accept the suit of Theodoro Madureira, an upright and publicly esteemed pharmacist who plays the bassoon in the local orchestra. An extremely methodical man, Theodoro labels his wife’s spice jars, marks the toothbrushes and constantly disinfects his hands with alcohol. On the wall at his pharmacy, there is a sign that reads: “A place for each thing and everything in its place.” This eccentric regularity is too much for the fiery Flor. She begins to be harassed by Vadinho’s spirit, who appears to her naked and ready to satisfy all her desires. Fighting against her lust for Vadinho’s spirit and her moral principles as an honest and married woman, Flor will live out an interior conflict which will lead to a surprising ending for the three of them: she will live with both men, forming a trio that will provide the public with hilarious situations, for Vadinho is a ghost which nobody but Flor can see. Thus, all three will live happily ever after.
