The Prophet

Synopsis

Marcos is a country lad marked by the premature death of his youngest brother, Lucas, and by the gift of foresight. With the help of Father Olavo and the support of his older sister, Ester, Marcos moves to Sao Paulo. In the metropolis he meets the love of his life, Sônia, without realizing that he's dealing with the fiancee of his cousin Camilo.

Marco and Sônia fall in love at first site. He has a strong premonition that Sônia is the woman of his life and tries to win her over. An upstanding and proper girl, Sônia ends the relationship with Camilo when she realizes her love for Marcos. Marco and Sônia start dating, while he looks for work to help his sister with the bills, and to earn the affection of Sônia's retired father, the grumpy Piragibe. Sônia works as a secretary in the crystal factory of Clóvis and helps her father with the household expenses.

Camilo, meanwhile, isn't about to give up so easily on Sônia, with whom he is in love with. Vindictive by nature, he sets out to interfere with Marcos' work opportunities and schemes to separate the new couple with the help of Paulito, the tennis club instructor, and Ruth, a pretty girl, but not well-regarded by others.

Downcast about not finding employment and seeing Ester in debt, almost losing the apartment, Marcos makes a wrong turn, following Camilo's advice and bets on the horses. He wins, after concentrating and seeing in his mind which horse would win. Ester, just like Sônia, doesn't approve of Marcos' behavior and only accepts the money to feed her daughter Baby, as she can't count on the financial assistance of her ex-husband Henrique.

Ruth becomes intrigued about helping Marcos’ bet on the long shot at the races and seeing him win a lot of money. Ambitious, she is dating Clóvis in exchange for expensive presents. After getting dumped by him, she sees in Marcos her chance to marry someone who doesn't know her reputation as a floozy, and even to get rich off of his visions. Paulito, who at the start helps Camilo as a friend, also gets excited about the opportunity to make some cash from Marcos' gift and forms a partnership with Camilo, Ruth and Henrique, ex-husband of Ester.

Marcos always rejected his gift, traumatized by the loss of his brother that he couldn't predict. But inflated by the self-seeking Ruth and the jealous Camilo, he falls into the trap of using his clairvoyance to earn money and thereby becomes known as the Prophet, distancing himself from the virtues of the righteous path, the vocation of giving of oneself to the next person without expecting anything in return, and from Sônia's love.

Disappointed by her love and the constant fights, Sônia breaks off the relationship and ends up giving in to the overtures of her boss, Clóvis, not because he's a wealthy widower and the owner of the crystal factory, but because he's considered a good man. Despite the kindness, friendship and good manners that he shows, Clóvis is a bad and ambitious person, and also sees a business opportunity in Marcos' gift. The crystal factory of Clóvis and Gilberto is going to sponsor various Prophet shows, despite the personal misunderstandings between Clóvis and Marcos.

Marcos, for his part, gets involved with Ruth, but tries to prevent the marriage of Clóvis and Sônia, when he has a premonition that Sônia will be unhappy and will be threatened by Clóvis. However, he is unsuccessful. After marrying Sônia, Clóvis in fact mistreats her, even physically, to the despair of Marcos.

In trying to save Sônia from Clóvis, Marcos will always have the help of Carola, Ruth's sister, who although initially hides a secret love for him, will end up showing herself to be a great and loyal friend. Carola is generous and capable of abandoning her own feelings to promote Marcos' happiness, and thereby get closer to Sônia again. This way, she frees herself to discover her perfect partner in the timid Arnaldo.

Sônia tolerates the bad treatment and madness from her husband but only out of the love she has  for Marcos, Piragibe and Analu, who Clóvis threatens, as she fears for their lives. But Sônia doesn't forget Marcos, and this makes Clóvis even more jealous, to the point of locking his wife in the attic, as he did with his first wife, Laura, mother of Analu.

In a brief and frustrated escape, Sônia and Marcos have a night of passion and she gets pregnant. The pregnancy accentuated Clóvis' madness, who is sterile, and reminds him of the past with Laura: Analu is the offspring of her mother and the piano teacher, which explains the emotional distance between Clóvis and the girl. Threatened by Clóvis, Laura ends the romance and doesn't tell the lover, a married man, about the pregnancy. She died some time after, her meal was poisoned by Clóvis.

The diary of Laura, written while she lived locked in the attic, is discovered by Sônia. At the same time, Sônia is made aware of the poisoned food by the housekeeper Joana, who suspected the poisoning of Laura. With the help of Joana, the chauffeur Amadeu and the aunt of Clóvis, Filomena, who blames herself for not having helped Laura while there was still time, Sônia manages to survive amid the danger. Clóvis fires the employees when he suspects betrayal, but is unaware that Abigail and her relations, hired to assume the house duties, are also allies of Sônia.

The diary ends up in the wrong hands of Ruth, who blackmails Clóvis to be a director in the factory. Ruth gets the job and maintains the blackmail, delivering parts of the diary to Clóvis, ten pages at a time. Her mother, Lia, the owner of a beauty salon, connives in this and the other plots of her daughter, as she dreams of seeing her well-off in life, to the detriment of Tony and Carola.

With the murder of Camilo, Clóvis and Ruth become allies once again to destroy Sônia and Marcos. Clóvis tries to poison Ruth, but she in turn poisons him; Clóvis dies and Ruth is imprisoned. Wandinha is also serving a jail sentence, for the accidental death of Camilo after an argument, when Wandinha reveals that she's pregnant and in love. Wandinha hands over her new born son, Mateus, to be brought up by Sônia and Marcos along with their own son, Daniel.
Sônia and Marcos finally marry and raise their sons Matteus and Daniel. Many years later, all of them meet up again to pay homage to Daniel, the winner of a scientific prize for research into a cure for cancer.

A little bit about the secondary plots

Ester, Marcos' sister, is bringing up her daughter with a lot of difficulty, as she can't rely on the help of her ex-husband Henrique. A teenager, Baby rebels because her mother doesn't accept her relationship with the good-for-nothing Tony, brother of Ruth and Carola, son of Lia. Tony and Baby go out with one another without their families' knowledge. On one hand, they rely on the help of the romantic Teodora, Baby's maid, on the other they encounter the plotting of Wandinha, Baby's friend, who is resolved to win Tony's affection. Baby gets pregnant by Tony and they will get married, but decide to separate for a while.

Henrique is going out with Teresa, but doesn't have the courage to acknowledge the relationship publicly. Independent and caring, Teresa suffers from this relationship, but finds support on the shoulder of timid Arnaldo, who is interested in her. Teresa is the secretary of Dr Micheal and good friends with Sônia. After many arguments, Teresa breaks off with Henrique and meets Flávio Leite again, presenter of the TV program "Gala com as estrelas" (Gala with the Stars) and her old flame. In one of his visions, Marcos discovers that Teresa had a daughter and the child is alive, contrary to what Lia had told her, her cousin? sister (ao contrário do que lhe dissera Lia, sua prima), who helped keep the secret hidden. Teresa discovers that Lia gave the girl up for adoption and lied for money, in collusion with the revengeful wife of Flávio, Sofia. Teresa and Flávio come together again to search for their daughter and confront many obstacles, but end up being friends with the adoptive father of the girl, Rosa, and leaving on a honey-moon trip. Lia and Sofia are judged and condemned, but Lia dies of a heart attack on hearing the verdict.

The shy Arnaldo and the lively Carola pretend to start dating to make Teresa and Marcos jealous, thanks to the advice of Madame Rúbia, an untrustworthy fortune-teller, who pushes one onto the other. Nevertheless, when they realize that they are really in love, end up in a "shotgun" wedding by Father Olavo, when they fight at the altar. Carola and Arnaldo form a funny investigative duo and help Teresa, Marcos and the police chief?delegado Moreira extensively.

Madame Rúbia is a seer who lost her powers by using them incorrectly. Helped mainly by her daughter Gisele, a manicurist at Lia's salon, and by sons Benjamin and Isaías, she collects previous information about the clientele to impress them with her 'predictions' and earn some money, seeing that her husband is a loafer . What Rúbia doesn't realize is that Ernesto pretends to look for work while he has an affair with Miriam, the fiery wife of Alceu, the owner of the luncheonette. Alceu is another person who doesn't realize, but his daughter Wandinha spends all her time trying to unmask her step-mother, with whom she clashes with.

Dreaming about a better life, the manicurist Gisele will have a relationship of highs and lows with the fishmonger Tainha. First, she rejects him because he always smells of fish and later tries to win his affection when he wins the lottery, but suffers staunch opposition from Edite, the stall keeper and sister of Tainha. Edite is dating Jonas, Tainha's friend.

Piragibe, Sônia's father, worked with Clóvis' father, but his retirement benefit doesn't cover the many bills. As he refused to sell the mansion where he lived happily with his deceased wife, Luci, the solution is to rent the rooms: one to Teresa and another to Arnold. In the house also lives the maid Dedé and her daughter Natália, friend of Analu, daughter of Clóvis. Natália and Analu study at the college where Ester is the director. Natália is embarrassed to be the daughter of a black maid and lies at college about her mother, which upsets Dedé. But Gilda the teacher, is also black, and helps her confront the truth.

Abigail, Paulito's grandmother, has a restaurant, which was closed after a plot hatched by Ruth and Camilo. Needing to work, Abigail approaches Clóvis to work as a housekeeper and thereby manages to help Sônia to survive in that house.
